There was a year I could smell the new truck before I stepped on the lot. I told myself the same story we’ve all told: better image, fewer breakdowns, more jobs. “It’ll pay for itself.”
The payment didn’t care if it rained three days in a row. It didn’t care if a supplier delay pushed a draw. It showed up like clockwork.
What finally calmed me down wasn’t a spreadsheet or a lecture. It was a simple order of operations I could live with: the business pays me, the team, the taxes, and the future — then I buy the truck. Tools and toys after essentials, not before. I called it “earning my upgrades.”
Funny thing when I followed it: some months, I still got the toys. Most months, I got peace of mind. And on the months I didn’t get either, nothing broke because the foundation was already funded.
If you’re wrestling with a big purchase — truck, machine, shop expansion — try this plain test: would you still sleep if that payment showed up during your slowest month of the last two years? If the answer is no, it’s not time yet. If the answer is yes because you’ve built real reserves and priced properly, go get it and enjoy.
Money shouldn’t bully you. It should serve you. If you want help building a plan that buys the right gear at the right time without gambling your sanity, I’m here.
